Vampire Bats Kill 13 People in Brazil
Fri Apr 2, 6:01 PM ET

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - Rabies-carrying vampire bats killed at least 13 people in a remote Amazon town in Brazil's northern state of Para last month, authorities said on Friday.

The state health care department said the thumb-sized creatures had attacked about 300 people -- an unusually high number -- since March 2 in the riverside Portel area, next to the world's biggest estuarine archipelago of Marajo.

"All the deceased had a history of recent bat attacks and six of them had confirmed human rabies from bat bites," a department spokeswoman said.

Other bite victims received vaccines and other anti-rabies treatment after March 19, when authorities became aware of the problem.

The spokeswoman said government scientists suspect the attacks are linked to a change in the bats' migration pattern caused by deforestation.

"There is no guarantee that we won't have more cases," she added.

The most recent death occurred last weekend.

Vampire bats normally feed on the blood of large birds and sleeping cattle, lapping it from cuts they make with their teeth. They often transmit rabies to cattle.

- Roy Disney talking about how screwed up Disney is..

Wow as we can see Roy Disney is on a real mission here and i wonder if comcast will be running team disney soon?

Anyway just finished watching The Passion Of Christ here and finally got to see the second part and its excellent. Its a really powerful film although it does drag a little in the middle which i already knew as i read online but Mel Gibson actually made an amazing film here!!! Some of my students are planning to see it and i am curious to see what they think about it. There is an excellent website you guys can go to if you wanna see more stuff from this film as well as other curious stuff like a Gibsion film and you can get there by clicking on the link above okay?

Well hopefully it wont rain this afternoon or at least until i get home later this evening. every time i come to Taguatinga it rains, i guess the place diesnt like me or it thinks that i love rain cause im english hahaha! Well i like rain but i like it more when i am sitting on my veranda with a cup of coffee or tea and watching the rain drops from the edge of my roof lol. Its getting pretty cloudy here though so i think that we are going to get alot of rain this afternoon and evening too.

im going to get coffee before it rains lol.. I think its going to hit here very soon and i dont wanna get soaked going to the bakers!!!

I`m pissed off..

I`ve spent the whole lunch time trying to find somewhere to have an eye exam so i can get some new glasses, you wouldnt believe how lazy people are here. Some only work on saturdays and others when they feel like it and in sobradinho three opticians told me that there are only two places in the city where i can get an eye exam. Even planaltina has more places than that even if they arent open most of the time. It is going to be next week i think before i get to have some new lenses, IM PISSED OFF!!!

On a good note though i got emails from my brother which was nice as i can get him to send me some new music cds from england like the new Avril Lavigne cd and another copy of The Darkness after those thieving bastards took my copy. Also his dvd writer is up and running now so i can get some vcd and dvd films from him :-) I wonder if his adsl is going to be up and running soon? lol

I have extra class this afternoon with some crazy teenagers, i hope that i dont have to spend the whole class shouting again as i always get a headache after this group lol

kay timne to get some emails done here and get ready for the classes to start..

I`m HOT.. I`m HOT!!!

Oh my god its hot right now, i have no idea what the tempreture is at the moment but i cant wait for 2pm to get here so that i can get into an air conditioned classroom. I am substituting this afternoon while one of the teachers is off sick so i get to teach a crazy TN9 group that is out of control and also a TN4 group that i really like alot as i get to have alot of fun with them all :-). Later on though i will head back to Planaltina so i can get some sleep as i feel knackered for some reason today.

I had to install the accessability option on the computer today as i still have to wait for my new glasses to arrive and i was getting alot of eye strain. To be honest it takes a bit of geting used to at first but now i am rattling along on my keyboard hahaha!! Still i wont spend too long typing as i have to give class all afternoon and dont wanna end up having to take a shitload of tylenol to get rid of a headache later ;-)

Well i saw the Passion Of Christ the other day, well most of it and even for someone like me who is not all that religious its an impressive film. I think that some people see it very differently from how its supposed to be viewed and hence all of the complaints and stuff. I think though that Mel Gibson has made a good job of it, yes its violent but then so is alot of the bible especially the old testament and that using a dead language was a little strange but the film is very powerful with many interesting points in it. Jesus is portrayed simply as a man, so we get to see alot of his emotions.. of course they are Gibsons thoughts about how jesus would react i guess but its still interesting to watch and i have had a few really good conversations classes with some of my students about the film and what they thought about it :-). Nice thing about living in Brasil is that alot of my students love to talk about religion so this film provides a conversation class with no preparation needed by me hahaha!!! Oh remember the gory photo from a previous post where i asked it it was from a horror film? Yeah, it was taken from this film so you can see its very violent but people have to look past the violence i think to the real story. Of course everyone will see it differently but makes it more interesting to watch right? :-) I`ll try to post more pics from this film if i get time okay? :-)

Well i am finally all moved in to my new place now, thats one of the reasons i havent posted as much as i had so many things to do. Adrianas family have moved to Brasilia now too so its really just me and Roberta at the moment :-). I have to get a bit more furniture and then i will have the basics for my place but other stuff is arriving all the time. Its a biggish place but for me its more than large enough and now i dont have to get up at the crack of dawn most days to give class as i love two minutes from my school hahaha!!

Oh Roberta has been growing more flowers for the garden too, i have a few of them now growing in pots and blooming so the veranda is looking better all the time :-). I need to get a hammock though just so i can lay in the fresh air or snooze in the afternoons lol. I will have to look around for one of these things as soon as i can as itll be great to just fall asleep there, its very cool and shady and once the rest of the plants are growing it`ll be alot better :-). I love to see plants and stuff around the house as it makes it look beautiful and also helps with the environment of the inside of the house too. I`ll have to see what sort of plants Robertas dad has growing as they have a farm where they grow many types of plants and trees. I`ll pick their brains when i go there sunday, well if i get time to go there :-)

Well i better get off here and go check my email before my little devils arrive!!
